I thrive on habit and routine (but at times I need something new thrown in to keep it interesting). I just sat down at collated my daily rituals that I need to help my day run smoothly and I thought I would share them.
Walking
I need an early morning walk. This is usually on the treadmill at the gym — an inline walk. Typically only 30-45 minutes but it just makes me feel better whilst I sit at my desk all day at work. Sometimes I walk outside if I don’t feel like travelling to the gym. But at least on a treadmill I can read as well. Nothing like multi-tasking and checking off two boxes in the morning!
Coffee
After the gym I return home to get ready in a very short space of time. But first I make an iced coffee. I love the coffee. I need the coffee. But I think I need the process and the routine more. It’s such a joyful, soothing task.
Breakfast.
Tied into this I also usually make a yogurt bowl. Greek yogurt, granola and maple syrup. Easy but the process just hits all the right spots.
Journal
I don’t journal in the typical sense of I am feeling overwhelmed etc. I write about what I read because that often reflects how I feel. I reflect on the pages I read the previous evening from my current reads and write a little reflective or critical summary. Just bullet points. I also read my article of the day as assigned by article log and pull together any thoughts, feelings or research points. I adore these simple, reflective moments. Pen and paper.
Post-Work Snacks
It’s not 5pm and the work day is over. I usually get home, do a small ab workout or stretch and tidy up any mess etc from the morning. Then the fun starts. I have a small window to write in before my partner gets home from work. So it’s me, my laptop, another coffee and a little glass bowl full of sweet and salty proper corn. It’s the most perfect evening sit down!
NYT Games
I have a few evening routines but I find they are not usually as fulfilling as sharing space with a partner is hard. But one thing I always do is sit down and do the NYT games after eating dinner. Wordle, Strands, Crossword etc. I am thinking of getting a little suduko book to do instead to separate the ritual from my phone.
These I would say are my main (most fulfilling rituals) that I try to do every week day to stay sane in corporate life! I of course also read but I don’t think that is a ritual to me! I would like to refine my evenings and hopefully with more intentional rituals set out I can also do that!
